The scope of the movie got completely lost in the actions of the characters. Sometimes even killer clown movies don’t turn out the way you wanted. I figured, if I got this stinker hosed down, I could start watching Season 2 of Wolf Creek and make up the lost time. Afterward, I felt guilty, but as soon as I had done it once and was able to pick up without feeling like I’d missed any vital details, I did it again.
With an 80-minute runtime that dragged on forever, I did something I try to never ever do. Clowntergeist never builds up enough momentum from that opening sequence to even raise the hairs on my arms and that was pretty disappointing. I easily departed my cinema room for bed afterward in complete darkness. For example, when I finished with this one though, I did not feel the urge to turn the lights on. Regular scenery turned backward and given a horror glow seem like solid details to make a clown horror movie work. Alas, it takes a completely different route.
Later, I wished the film stuck with the clown statue idea or even aligned itself with other clown inanimate objects scaring the pants off people including myself. Think back to Poltergeist (1982) and try and remember the clown doll that sat on the shelf.
